Hoddesdon Town secured a 2-0 victory against Hutton FC on Saturday, with goalkeeper Liam "The Viking" Nugent once again stealing the spotlight at Lowfield.
Nugent's stellar performance between the sticks earned him his second Man of the Match award in just a week, following his commanding display in Wednesday’s defeat against Stanway Pegasus in the cup.
The Hoddesdon shot-stopper pulled off a series of crucial saves to deny the visitors throughout the 90 minutes, ensuring Hutton FC were left frustrated in their attempts to break through. His composure and agility proved decisive as Hoddesdon’s backline, marshalled by Nugent, kept a clean sheet to secure the win.
The two-goal margin was enough to see Hoddesdon take all three points, with the crowd at Lowfield showing their appreciation for the home side’s efforts. But it was Nugent, nicknamed "The Viking" for his commanding presence and massive beard (although he has had a trim recently), who was the standout performer.
After the game, a packed clubhouse saw Nugent presented with his Man of the Match award, sponsored by Greene King Level Head IPA. The goalkeeper was awarded a case of the brewery’s beer, much to the delight of supporters who praised his back-to-back honours.
Hoddesdon’s victory boosts their position in the table to 6th, with Nugent's performances providing a vital foundation for the team's recent defensive resilience. As the team looks ahead to their next fixture, Nugent’s growing influence between the posts continues to be a key factor in their ambitions this season.
