Hoddesdon Town return home this coming Saturday, having played their opening ten fixtures of the new season away from their Lowfield base, and the supporters will be glad to see the lads take to the hallowed turf once again.
There is an action packed weekend of live action at the club, including the first team, our under 18s, Parsloe 15s, as well as tons of live sport on the Big Screens, including the North London Derby.
First up however, is the visit of Hutton FC, in what is sure to be a tough fixture for Simon Riddle's tricky Lilywhites. Hutton currently reside 3rd in the table and are largely expected to be in the mix for promotion come the end of the season. A record of 6 wins, 2 losses and a draw see's them forge ahead in the search for glory and a goal difference of +19 in their opening nine league fixtures is a solid base. On their travels, Hutton have been imperious thus far, with 4 wins from 4 games, including 14 goals scored. Indeed, the away record is better than the home form, playing at Billericay's ground. An opening day 2-1 defeat courtesy of Hackney Wick and a 2-0 reverse against Coggeshall Town are Hutton's only failures this season. They bounced back from that first defeat by thumping Newbury Forest 10-0, in a confidence boosting win. Stuart Zanone and Josh Boxall both notched hat tricks on that occasion and the former currently leads the Thurlow Nunn Division One South Golden Boot table, with twelve goals in ten games.
Last time out, Hutton put on another convincing display on Wednesday evening, with a 5-1 home win against Rayleigh Town, with both Zanone and Boxall grabbing a goal each in the rout.
Last season, this game finished in a tight 0-0 draw. Having lost heavily to Hutton in the League Challenge Trophy previously, Hoddesdon were looking for retribution against one of the in form sides in the league and they did not disappoint. It was a game of very few clear-cut chances where both defences excelled. At the time, the draw extended the Lilywhites’ unbeaten league run to six games and lifted Hutton up into second place in the league.
It was clear from the start of the game that the Lilywhites were going to have to be strong in the aerial battles and would have to match them for their physicality if they were going to take anything from the game. Lilywhites’ manager, Simon Riddle, would have liked to have fielded the side that won so well at Cannons Wood on the previous Saturday, but was forced into one change when keeper, Liam Nugent, declared himself unfit and Ethen Gannon was called up in his place. As he invariably does, Ethen was up to the challenge and had a very good game. One save, in particular, stood out when he launched himself to tip an excellent 25-yard free-kick, over the bar.
This was as close as the visitors were going to come to scoring and it would be fair to say that, of the few chances there were in the game, the better ones fell to the Lilywhites. Kyle Roberts was thwarted by the keeper on two occasions in the first half but the best chance fell to Dion Laughton in the closing minutes of the game when he mis-kicked from five yards following confusion resulting from a Connor Bolton free-kick.
On balance, a draw was probably a fair result and one which seemed to satisfy both teams and Man of the Match that day was Jack Riddle.
Hoddesdon come into this game off the back of a couple of poor displays, losing two cup games in quick succession, to Oxhey Jets and Stanway Pegasus respectively. However, last time out in the league, the Lilywhites were sensational, defeating Cannon's Wood 4-0 in scintillating fashion, and we hope that the lads can rediscover that form heading into the weekend.
In team news, Connor Casey will have a late fitness test and Callum Bennison looks set to return to the squad from holiday. Sam Cross took a knock on Wednesday evening and so his fitness remains to be seen. Man of the Match at Stanway, Liam Nugent, is expected to don the gloves and captain Jack Gibbs to take the armband.
Also on Saturday we have Southampton v Man U on the big screens in the clubhouse at 12:30pm, followed by Aston Villa v Everton at 5:30pm and then Bournemouth v Chelsea at 8pm. The clubhouse will be open for all of these games. Then, on Sunday, we have Parsloe under 15s v Harlow Hawks under 15s kicking off at 10am, followed by Hoddesdon Town under 18s v Potters Bar Crusaders under 18s kicking off at midday. The live sport also continues with the North London Derby, Tottenham v Arsenal, at 2pm coupled with Wolves v Newcastle at 4:30pm.
